A meow with an upright tail and slow blinks reads very differently from the same sound with flattened ears and a lashing tail. Tail, ears, eyes and posture carry as much meaning as the voice.

A sudden change — a normally quiet cat becoming very vocal, night-time yowling in an older cat, or crying in the litter box — can point to pain, stress or illness. No app can assess that.
